General description of the collection: The Richard D. Winters collection spans the years 1930-2005, with the bulk of the material concentrated in the periods, 1943-1945 and 1990-2004. The collection documents Winters' military service in World War II and the Korean War and Winters' correspondence with the men of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment over the years. The collection consists of photocopies of Winters' personal papers and personnel documents; and photocopies of correspondence, memoirs, news clippings, oral history transcripts and photographs from the men in Easy Company. Also, included are photocopies of oral history transcripts, drafts and critiques of Stephen Ambrose's book, BAND OF BROTHERS , the BAND OF BROTHERS television series BIBLE, and research material from Winters' autobiography, BEYOND THE BAND OF BROTHERS. Major (MAJ) Richard Davis Winters was born on 21 January 1918 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. On 25 August 1941, he was inducted in the United States Army in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Winters was assigned to Camp Croft, South Carolina for basic training. On 6 April 1942, Winters was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS).
